COMPOSITION COMMISSIONS & PERFORMING OPPORTUNITIES
As part of CoMa’s festival taking place across UK and Europe, Devon Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (Exter) will collaborate in an immersive concert of new music on 7 March 2020.
Musicians will be throughout the museum, performing repertoire in response to
the objects around them. This will comprise solos, chamber groups and large
ensembles. It will include 3 professional musicians with experience of
performing music from cultures represented in the museum eg African, adding a
new element to the music, giving the compositions a closer relationship to the
museum objects, and providing a performing opportunity for those musicians.
Performances will take place simultaneously in all galleries, allowing the public
to freely move throughout the space as they engage with objects which are
given a new perspective through music. For participating musicians, this will be
an opportunity to perform new music in an iconic setting. Bringing together new
music and artefacts provides audiences with a different way to engage with
museum objects and with the music.
In addition to existing contemporary music, we will commission 6 new works
and a Finale written by DPO’s Music Director Leo Geyer. 4 emerging
composers (within 3 years of graduating) will also receive a bursary to write new
work and be mentored by Geyer, including a workshop with musicians. This will
provide the composers with professional development including exposure at
one of the UK’s biggest new music festivals.
